My parents, born of impoverished immigrant and Roman Catholic stock, went north because of World War II. Growing up north ruined me for more crowded climes, although my parents insisted that I and my siblings travel to cities and learn how to live there. My parents taught me compassion, passion for learning, and that no matter how isolated others may think you are, you are a citizen of the earth, with the privilege and responsibility that entails. I’ve been blessed with two children.
I did my doctoral research in Canada’s Arctic Islands. My years on that land and ocean forever expanded my vision. I learned quickly that people indigenous to the land know it best. What I want to know deeply is the land, the sea, the natural world – call it what you will.
Like many northerners and rural people, I went south, and to cities, for my formal education. There I explored live music, theatre, architecture, art.
